SSE letter about Meter Change Scam???

I recently received a letter about a meter change from SSE. The letter informed me that the warranty of my current electricity meter has expired and that they will fit a new one free of charge.
Maybe I am being skeptical I don't know, the letter has randomly arrived through my letter box. I did call them up and spoke to a man who said that they are sending out letters and it will be a simple job. I am not convinced and it could be a scam. What do you guys think?

routine meter change - no issueNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Have you lived in the same property for more than forty years and been with the same supplier? If not how do you know it is a random arrival rather than a regular periodic one?0

Are you supplied by SSE?0

This bit bothers me:
"warranty of my current electricity meter has expired".
I've never heard a utility company use that sort of phrase and i wouldn't expect them to either.0 -
Terminology is to talk about 'meter recertification' and when I worked in that area many years ago different types had different periods - 15 or 20 years was common.
Look at the id plate on the meter - what does it say? If the meter was manufactured or recertified around 15/20 years ago the likelihood is that it does need replacing. The programme normally happens the year before the certification expires as it is often difficult to get access... ;-)0 -
Why is it a scam ? what benefit is it to them to spend money fitting new meters. its explained fully. All meters get changed , usually on a 25 year basis.0

I thought it was just me but that is what he said. I will call up my energy supplier.
