About time landlords and some proper updated legislation

I am endlessly reading about gay couples and ethnic minorities taking businesses to court for treating them differently in that they do not provide the same service as they might to a hetrosexual or white person, and quite rightly so in many cases.

But looking at some rental property in Saffron Walden over the weekend it really stood out how so many properties give a list of so many things they do not want their tenants to do, and prejudicing many of them.

Main examples are NO children, NO Pets, NO DSS and NO smoking etc etc, for crying our loud, these are supposed to be potential homes for people.

I can already hear the cry of the bleeding heart landlords on here, on how their life is so difficult because of the non conformist tenants who dare live a life in a way they see fit. You get the impression that many of these landlords would have their tenants forced into suspended animation if the law allowed it.

It is about time legislation was seriously looked at in the UK, and landlords stopped from cherry picking tenants on what are legal activities and lifestyles.

no children ,is the property suitable for children .
I have a three bed house a woman has asked me to rent it to her and her five children .I do feel sorry for her but its not suitable .

No pets .I had a one bed flat rented to a guy with a dog .
Two years after he moved out the joiner replacing the floors could still smell the dog.

No dss some mortgage lenders don't allow dss ,insurance is higher for a landlord with dss and more likely to default on the rent .

I declined two dss tenants recently in favour of a working tenant .

No smoking ,who would be selfish enough to smoke indoors these days

If you replaced the industry in your example with another service industry, say restaurants, or maybe an entertainment company, like a theme park, and they had a list of people they choose not to serve, there would be absolute uproar

Of course, if individuals choose to abuse a service or company, then they should be treated according to their behaviour, but that should be on a person by person basis

But surely these should all be considerations you should make before entering into the business of providing homes?

It would be like opening a high end shop, then getting upset because some of your clientele didnt fit your preferred dynamic. Say you wanted to serve millionaires, but found the poorer end of society also like to wear you clothes - maybe a bit like the burberry label had a few years ago. They are all customers at the end of the day, and if they are paying, and do not do anything illegal or break the rules, then there shouldnt be any way of prejudicing or discriminating

it you had a flat to rent and four people applied for it which one would you give it to .

1 female aged 22 on dss ,family leaving the area .We dont know how much housing benefit she will get .

2 male dss aged 35 on DLA and ESA ,likely to get most of his rent paid ,however he is only out of prison after throwing his girlfriend down the stairs and taking a hammer to her ,he may also be on drugs .

3 female with dog and no deposit ,on dss

4 male aged 30 working as manager in next .Works approx 50hrs per week ,currently living with mother 1/4 mile away but wants own place .

    guess which tenant I took

so you think a restaurant refusing to service smokers would cause uproar?
or a hotel with a non smoking policy?

or one refusing to allow a dog?

    Some common sense.

This has to be one of the dumbest threads for a while.

    Eh?

Theme parks don't allow dogs, and most now don't allow smoking.

AIUI some now don't even allow adult males outside of a family group in case they are of an 'unatural inclination'.

So theme parks, like some landlords, don't allow smoking, don't allow pets, and choose not to serve some types of people.

Entirely legally. And without much in the way of uproar.;)

Personally I would get rid of all private landlords, rebalance the housing market somewhat so they aren't necessary.

Personally, you would probably like to destroy this country and delivery the benefits of the USSR and Mao's China on all the ordinary people of this country.

But we agree that every UK resident ought to have the human right to live in a free 4 bed house with a lovely garden in Westminster.

It's interesting that the single thing that would help renters more than just about anything else is the one thing Generation rent probably least wants - to let landlords to stop paying any tax.

No doubt it will eventually be introduced in London through the backdoor out of complete desperation to ensure there are enough low paid support staff by introducing 'rent credits'.

Hugely inefficient way of doing it though.
Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.
