What Insurance should a tradesman have?

I know this might seem strange and most people probably never ask.

I need someone to clean and mend my guttering. I have a recommendation which I believe is a local one man band. I assume that means a man with a ladder not sure what safety equipment he will have?

But what insurance should he have? I am not too worried about any damage that he does to my property. But assume he will have public liability insurance and will ask him that. But I am more concerned about any damage he does to himself while on my property. If he fell off his ladder or such like.

Yes you are right I am probably over thinking this. But was wondering before I go ahead and get someone in.

He/she should have public liability insurance.

The rest is up to him/her - their chosen trade, their risk assesment, their responsibility.

Are you sure. If he is on my property, could he sue me?

I do have buildings and contents insurance.

What are you planning to do - push his ladders from underneath him??

Like I said - tradesmen (like myself) have a duty of care which involves risk assessment and it is up to them to insure themselves against such occurrences.

Never in a decade of trading have I felt the need to ask a homeowner if I'm insured on their household policy if I trip over that wobbly slab in the back garden.

Anyway - if you're insured this is all hypothetical!!!

Well yes insurance would pay out. But then that does not cover me feeling bad if something happened to him while on my property. As he was doing a job for me. I got friends who would not even lend me a drill because they would feel guilty if I hurt myself.

Public liability insurance is not compulsory for contractors . That said , I have pl cover for myself , full time employees ( paye) temporary staff and sub contractors . Also have personal injury cover for my staff ( paye ). All the insurance should cover me if we cause any harm to you or your property , however , if you or your property caused harm to me or any of my staff and this was deemed beyond my reasonable forsight in the risk assessment , I dare say my insurance company would look to recover their costs from you.

ohh, I've got a friend I'd not lend anything (else) to, mainly because he breaks anything you lend him . . .
Got others I'd not lend to, 'cos you never get the item back, but I'm sure you don't fall into either of those categories;)

Calley - I have to say you're way over thinking this: please accept that a tradesman wouldn't put himself at risk and certainly not hold you responsible - how else do you expect any tradesman in anyone's house to do any work at all??

In the nicest possible way - stop worrying about this, it really isn't an issue!

Thank you. Yes I do understand and normally don't even think about. I have gas safe people in and even a painter/decorator a couple of years ago. And never once thought about insurance.

I think its because he would be up a ladder.
