Good side of fencing

Options
I am having my garden fenced with close board panels. The fencer told me whoever get the good side will lose the flower bed. I intend to let my neighbour choose but told her if she chooses the good side, there will be damaged to her plants. I am not bothered which side I will have. If I choose the good side on the right side of my neighbour, he advises me to have the bad side and gate facing me for security as he said intruders can use the aris rail to climb. Personally I think it will an eye sore but am interested to hear what members of this forum think. I think one must have all the good side of the fences the same all around not a mixture of both but hubby said he is the professional and I should take his advice. Thanks

I was always given to understand the good side should face the neighbour and the other side should face you the owner of the fence. I assumed it was due to making it easier to rectify any repairs.

But it on a close board fence it's easier to make repairs from the good side.

The good side can face whichever way. He who pays for the fence gets to decide.

. If you're paying for a fence you should have the side you want facing you. The fencer may be a professional but his opinion of which way the fence faces is irrelevant.

    Agree with Norm and !!!!!!.

My experience is that the 'good side' usually faces the person who owns the fence (seems obvious!).

I would say there is no right way, so do what you want to do, whilst trying to respect your neighbour's preferences.

on the last fence we had erected we gave our neighbour the good side. Our house has a side extension so the path down that side is quite narrow, the extra inches the good side would have taken up would mean it would be difficult to get bikes and wheelie bins down the side,

I don't see why you neighbour's flower beds should suffer either way. If you have the good side the posts should not cross into their property, If they have the good the posts need to move further your way so the fence panels do not cross the boundry.

Unless it is a shared boundary and you have an agreement with the neighbour then the WHOLE of the fence should be on your side. Regardless of which way it is the fence has a width of X inches so there is no loss or gain depending on orientation.

If you are losing inches by having the good side then the posts are in the wrong place

It's not uncommon for the cost of a new fence to be shared. You're both getting a benefit from it. I'm not so sure i'd ask if i was getting it done but i may offer if next door decided to do it.

I had thought that only one fence is the responsibility of the building owner?
Normally, looking down the garden the fence to the right is yours and is for you to maintain. I could be wrong on this though.
