The number of Appeals lodged with the Social Entitlement Chamber of the First Tier Tribunal was as follows:
2008/9 242,825
2009/10 339,213
2010/11 418,416
2011/12 370,800
2012/13 507,131
2013/14 401,896
The DWP had expected the numbers to peak in 2015 (indeed advised HMCTS that they would), but with Universal Credit rollout being delayed, they now expect the peak to occur in 2018.
HMCTS are now clearing 50,000 hearings per month and so the backlog/wait is now reduced to 21 weeks.
