Hi everyone,
I have recently been looking at life insurance and unfortunately have not been able to get any online quotes at all due to the mental health questions.
I am now 24 but during my school years I saw my GP as I was scratching and superficially cutting myself. At 14 I was referred to a counsellor for a few sessions and at 19 I had a few more sessions with a Wellbeing Worker. Since this time (5 years) I have been mentally fine and have not harmed myself.
I understand that the fact I previously harmed myself makes me a risk, but I was never hospitalised, never given any medication and my injuries never required medical attention. I have never had a medical diagnosis and am not even sure whether to select the Depression / Anxiety / Stress umbrella for these questions, as I can only describe it as a "rough patch"!!
So, I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and what kind of quotes you were offered, if any? All the online quotes I've done just end with "Please call to discuss your quote further", or similar. I'm terrified I won't be able to find an affordable policy, or one at all
Thanks for reading,
Laura

You need to go to an IFA or broker.
Due to your past medical history you will need specialist help with getting a policy.0 -
Online sites are more for straightforward cases.
This is something that does not really fall into that and so you would be best speaking to a mortgage or financial advisor. It will need to be disclosed as I think its a little more than a rough patch but I do not think it will prevent you getting life insurnace. I think there will likely be an exclusion on there for mential disorder but you should really sit down with a professional and let them go through it.
Dont let it worry you what people will think (if that was in the back of your mind) I doubt they will bat an eyelid.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Thank you for the replies, I thought I might have to do that
It's not so much the embarrassment of it, it's the worry of how much it will cost if I'm lucky enough to get anything!! My husband has a follow-up appointment for something else in August so we're actually waiting until that's out of the way before we proceed, but it's playing on my mind terribly.
I actually wish I'd never even told my GP how I was feeling, then nobody would be any the wiser... it all seems so minor and irrelevant now
I have no idea how people get on when they have a history of hospital admission or actual diagnoses0
