What lenders see on credit report

I'm aware that lenders can't actually see the names of the companies you hold current and past credit agreements with but can they see the names of the companies that have searched your file for credit-granting purposes in the last year?

I always thought that they did not see lenders names, but twice recently I have had to confirm my id by answering questions about lenders names on my credit report.
Natwest asked me to name lenders opened at certain dates by giving me multiple choice answers, when I took an existing customer balance transfer offer.
Also a car finance company made me answer names of accounts for the same reason.
I Would not put it past them to be pretending to know to look more secure or to scare fraudsters off tho.0 -

It's likely that the credit reference agency provides an identity verification API or web service for the lender to confirm identity. The lender would not have access to and store the data to support identify verification processes. Basically in this scenario, all the agency does is confirm to the lender that the applicant or customer is legit.0 -

But now, of course, an employee of the lender has some potentially useful data for the commitment of so called identity fraud.0
