What happens if the local concil can't get you a house?

Curious about this one, my landlord has told us he is selling up so we have had to find a new house. Searching local estate agents has proved to be pointless, so I registered with the council for a housing executive house, they have nothing at the moment which doesn't surprise me considering they have sold most of their stock and not built any more, so what is likely to happen when the landlord says out you go and the council has no houses? I should mention I am married with 3 kids so 1 bedroom apartments are useless.

Your best source of information is the shelter website.
You may at first be put into emergency tempory accommodation, could be a room in bed and breakfast, could be something better until something better becomes available.
You do not have to move just because LL says you must. Do not make yourself intentionally homeless, stay until you are evicted!0 -
We have 8 weeks minimum, I was just thinking about worst case scenarios, I am hoping something turns up but I hadn't banked on such high demand for private rentals, The landlord has given us an excellent reference as we have been in this house some 8 years which will help if we could actually find something to rent.0

Worst case scenario is that you leave the property without the landlord going through the formal repossession process and the Council regard you as having made yourself "intentionally homeless" and consequently they can wash their hands of you and your family.
Unless you can persuade the Council to accept you as homeless before you vacate without a repossession order. But this is something you should be extremely wary about. To put it mildly.
If you need help understanding the formal eviction process, just say so and information can be provided.
Has your landlord issued a Section 21 Notice yet and was your deposit properly registered? Kindly confirm that you are in England or Wales. Tenancy regs are different in Scottishland and NI.0 -
I'm in NI, the deposit scheme did not come in here until 2013, but because I have been in the house more than 5 years he has to give 8 weeks notice.
The council thing seems quite complicated, I have registered at the moment and am on a waiting list, that's all I know. What's the best thing to do?0 -
Any housing associations in the area?0
-
Don't think so, its not something you hear about in NI, did a search couldn't find anything, it seems to be all housing executive, did find a story from late last year that says 500+ on the waiting list in this local area with 23 new builds planned this year. Hmmm0
-
I'm guessing that as you can afford to rent privately but just can't find anywhere suitable yet, you will be pretty low down on the waiting list.
Is there any chance that you could move to a different area where you would have a better chance of getting a private rental?0 -

Why is a 1-bed apartment useless? Are you entitled to something bigger, because you decided to have 3 children without being financially stable?
Stick it out in your existing property for as long as possible.0 -
