Van Insurance

Hi

I had a break-in to my van in January this year and I made two claims. There were two separate insurances. One covered me to drive the van and is fully comprehensive, the other was for the tools. I made the claim to my fully comp insurers for repairs to the door lock which as it transpired I paid for myself. However, no insurance money was paid to me. The insurance company had this as a 'pending' claim but didn't bother contacting me about it and as a result nothing actually happened. The insurance was renewed under the automatic renewal system where they do it unless you say otherwise. The Premium has gone up a massive £11 a month and I assume this is because I made a claim, even though the insurance didn't pay me anything. Do they have a legitimate reason to increase my premium irrespective of whether a claim costs them anything? The second insurance paid me in full for the loss of my tools.

Your premium may or may not have gone up because of the claim.

But you did report the incident and even though there was no claim you will still have this incident on your record as a loss.

Losses do normally end up causing a premium loading.

(And you will need to disclose it to other insurers you approach for quotes over the next 2/5 years depending on how long a history is required)

Thank you Quentin. In view of this can I perhaps continue with the claim, if it is still pending, and at least get some recompense that way. The lock wasn't properly repaired so I need to take the van back in anyway.

If not properly repaired then the repairer should put it right for you without charge.

Before deciding on pursuing a claim check it will be cost effective.

Take into account your excess and any loss of ncd.

Also bear in mind you currently have a non fault incident on your record. If you now make a successful claim them you will have a fault claim on your record.

Do dummy quotes online with a claim and loss of ncd and compare that with the premium with just the loss and do the sums
