Student Loan Repayments

Options
Okay, I know this is a stupid question. I graduated from university in 2011, and a week on Monday I will be starting a new job in the NHS that will push me into the repayment of student loan bracket for the first time.

My question is, does HMRC deduct it automatically, or do I have to instruct them of my new salary?

When you say "start new job" do you mean a new role same employer or new employer?

If new employer then on your new starter declaration, cross the box to make student loan deductions. If you give a P45, it SHOULD have that box checked on it. If the box isn't checked, that is when you need to contact HMRC.

If you've been with the employer long-term, they should already know that deductions are to take place when earnings are over the threshold, I'd wait until I got a first payslip to check. If it's not correct, then you can ring HMRC.

You need to remember to check the box when you fill out a new starter declaration until your loan is paid off regardless of your salary.
