Anonymous Complaint

Hi All

My first time on moneysavingexpert but it looks like a good port of call to ask a question; I would appreciate any advice or comments regarding this situation.

In a nutshell, I work in a large call centre and have been subject to some bullying/harassment by numerous members of my team of eight. This consists of under the breath comments, filthy looks, sly digs, sniping, comments as I leave room but nothing direct. Always sly cowardly things.

As a result it has affected me mentally, not wanting to go into work, anxiety, sleeplessness and on a more serious end has resulting in me losing my relationship and in self harm.

I have been to my manager six times now to voice my concerns but he has taken only minimal action and does not seem concerned.

As a result, this behaviour and effects came to a head today when two members of my team decided they would go out andgo drinking during working hours. This literally consisted of popping out for 5 minutes, downing a few jaegar bombs/vodka shots then returning to work.

Well in a moment of anger I placed an anonymous tip off and they have both been fired on the spot, literally caught with drinks in their hands during their break. For anyone who wishes to label me a snitch or gras, please bear in mind we work in the security industry and literally hold people's lives and livelihoods in our hands.

After their departur, I once again had an assortment of sly comments aimed in my general direction, which included physical violence.

My Question is, does my employer have an obligation to protect me from reprisals and any action aimed back at me?

Kind regards in advance, I feel like an idiot but I don't want to have to leave my job. I am a single parent, own my own house and have 2 children

yes there should be processes in place to deal with grievances and to protect you whilst at work

if you have put them in wrting to your line manager and nothing has been done - then put your formal grievenace in writing to your HR manager.

You did the right thing to report them so don't fret about that.

Can you clarify the above - was it a comment about physical violence ie. a threat, or was it actual "violence"?

It's hardly an anonymous tip-off if you tell the internet about it afterwards.

    Oh, the irony.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • In regards to the actual threats of violence, it was more based around "If we find out who did this, we'll dropkick them for you" - Again nothing direct, more implied

And to answer your comment 'ohreally' yes it is very ironic that fate should come back around on them - But after the months of grief and difficulties I've been placed under, I really couldn't care less about them now

You did the right thing. Some people in this forum have this attitude as if they do everything correctly so ignore them.

Have you talked to HR about this?

Which could have been a throwaway remark. Colleagues appearing to offer support to their now former colleagues, but having no intention of carrying out the supposed threat.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Or they could be a vicious thug with a propensity to violence who would think nothing of "settling a score" for one of their mates.

    Who knows?

Did you have any evidence when you went to your manager? did they investigate your complaints and did anyone back up your side of events because if you didn't and they didn't then it is your word against others and it puts the manager in a difficult position.

Have you reported the physical violence to the police?

Assuming the situation at work is as the OP describes, then it would be pointless reporting it to the police as those involved would deny it and those on the periphery would have seen and heard nothing.
I would also say that the OP did precisely the right thing in reporting those drinking on the premises AND in doing so anonymously. There seems to have been little support from management and there was probably a concern that the OP's name would be used if the accusations had to be put to the drinkers. As it turned out they were caught in the act so that didn't occur.
In fairness to the management, it is very difficult to act on accusations if there is nobody to back up the claims. However it might have been possible to raise bullying / intimidation as a general subject at team meetings. That action alone might have discouraged at least the 'followers' from continuing. One the followers back off, the main instigators tend to be much less 'brave'.
