odd ball disc clone

Options
to save a lot of work I need to clone a 2.5mm drive that is sat in an intel nook to a new drive , its a weird setup and I have ext4 on it , even worse its formatted to ext 4 then the openelec sys placed in a separate partition.

the problem is , I have access to h/drive caddies but only have a windows machine

its about an hour or 2 to reload and rebuild the drive (new one) to openelec , plus addons and then there is about 800g of mp4 and mp3 files to copy over

I reckon you won't have any trouble doing the copy with a live CD.

ok , that was going thru my mind as well , but alas I am not a Linux user

can you suggest a simple version (pendrive) that will allow usb and do a clone rather than just a copy of files

will mini partitions tools 9 do a non "windows" clone? (in win 8)

I haven't tried yet , but I used that for creating the ext4 on the drive

Clonezilla will handle Ext4 (and pretty much anything else) no problem at all. LiveCD or bootable pendrive, it will clone disk to disk or create an image, with various compression options (depending on whether speed or compactness is your priority).

Boot a LiveCD. Check which hard disk is which with

    sudo fdisk -l

Check again, because the device after the "of=" parameter will be overwritten. Then run

    sudo dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/sdy bs=32M

The new hard disk needs to be bigger than the old one, of course. If the new one is bigger, you'll need to resize the partitions with gparted for instance in order to use the free space.

Just be wary that in openelec I think extlinux bootloader might be set to boot by UUID so the bootloader will not find openelec on your cloned disk so you might have to tell it the new UUID.

Freddy I'd suggest setting up a virtual Linux machine on your Windows PC to help manage any Linux stuff and also a good way of experimenting with Linux; Virtualbox is ridiculously simple to use.

Guide for installing Linux Mint in Virtualbox here:

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
