What would be the consequences if I just put some Thistle Multi Finish Plaster on it, on its own?

If you stick stuff to paint, the whole thing is relying on the adhesion of the paint to stay in place. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Multi-finish is just that - it's the finishing 2/3 mm layers of plaster skim - it's not designed to level out the wall first.

If you're competent/confident then use hardwall/bonding to even out the surface first, THEN use multi-finish.

OK, thanks for your contributions guys.

I'll mull over what to do, with the area being so small and the utility room (not the greatest looking place anyway) I'd hoped to just put a single layer of plaster over.

But that simple thought has proved otherwise following these posts, thanks all and I'll get back to the drawing board!
