I like buying veg from market stalls. The price is good and they don't bat an eyelid when you buy one potato and two carrots.

If anything it's saved me money so far! :D I used to go out about once a week and now i spend all my spare time at his so zero costs, plus im spending less on food as i'm eating at his. Though we don't live together so that might be where extra costs come in!

Doesn't that assume that you're choosing to do all your shopping in supermarkets rather than from local shops and markets where there's no problem in buying individual items?

Is now wondering how anyone can "choose" to do their shopping in supermarkets when there aren't any local shops/markets available to buy there greengrocery in. Scratches my head in puzzlement at how to shop in places that don't exist near enough to use...

Newsflash = where I live, for instance, there ISNT a greengrocer! I personally manage a bit better because of a combination of I am starting to grow what I can of my own food, combined with the fact that I buy organically where possible anyway (so I have a couple of food outlets for greengrocery available to me that wouldn't be affordable to those who cant find the "premium" to pay for organic food). I do know the majority of people here though have pretty much no choice except to buy their fruit and veg. through supermarkets.

But I do still have problems with salad packs going off before I can finish them. Also - its one thing to say "Eat frozen vegetables" to people - but many of us (including me) don't like frozen vegetables. The only frozen vegetables I ever eat are peas and spinach. However, I hate frozen sweetcorn for instance (though I like it fresh). I hate frozen mushrooms (though I like them fresh) and so the list goes on.

Single and alone = v cost effective, you can be as MSE as you like.

Single and dating = v expensive, esp in London.

Single (not married) and in an established relationship = starts getting cheaper again as you share time in each other's environments and give the pricey restaurants a miss.

also attached to a guy who is similarly MSE means you can happily suggest cheap dates (we regularly do mystery shops for our nights out, or go whereever the voucher offers are, or set lunch at fancy places)

Whereas on first dates, you don't want to look tight so you don't tend to do these things.

Of course if you get together with a spendy person, then you will be worse off!

Where do you live? I have never lived anywhere were there isn't at least a weekly market somewhere in the vicinity. Round here there are farmers markets that do a tour of all the towns, and the town I work in has a permanent market.

And outside of that, the fruit and veg at Aldi has improved in quality enormously over the last few years and is much cheaper than at Tesco, Sainsbury's etc.

I've lived all over the country and never lived anywhere that didn't have a market and/or individual shops within reach, even though I didn't run a car in those days.

Re sweetcorn - bought in tins usually (or is that different for me as well?).

What are confused dot come on about? No WAY is it cheaper to be single than to be in a relationship! :rotfl:

You have two incomes coming in, and not much more outgoings.

I have spent time single and I have spent time in a couple.

    And I know which I prefer! :p

Nope...no market. The nearest one I can think of is a 2 hour return bus journey away (on infrequent buses). Precisely one "individual" shop in which fruit and vegetables can be bought and its a sideline to them - and its expensive and the food looks well on its way out at the outset. I can think of many, even smaller, places round here where I can see the only shopping facility is one little corner shop and often not that. It is what it is and not what other people think it should be.

As I said - I have options that many others wouldn't have anyway - because I can get to a farmers market and buy the organic food I buy there (but its a bit of a trek to do so). Hence I often don't wish to make quite that much effort for everyday shopping and get supermarket food instead. But...as I said...there are many here who cant afford the organic price premium and so the majority of people here have to take the family size pre-packs that supermarket do of many things. Today's supermarket visit saw me having to buy a pack of 2 peppers (as organic ones don't come singly there) and quite a large packet of carrots (ditto - they don't come singly) and cross my fingers with both that I use them up before they go off.
