Closing Barclays current account

Hi

What is the best way to close two Barclays Bank current accounts?
Is it by going into the branch or by post to head office?
What will they need of me before they close the accounts, ie debit cards, cheque books etc?

I have not used the accounts in over a year and only a pennies in each account.

  • They will need your plastic cards and any unused cheques back before closing the account.
  • I would say write directly to the branch(es) where the account(s) are held. Request written confirmation that the accounts are closed. Also confirm in the letter that any cards and chequebooks relating to the account(s) have been cut up and or destroyed. However don't chuck them away just in case they ask for them!
I closed a Barclay's account last year after receiving the £100 for opening it and they didn't need the plastic or chequbooks etc., just a confirmation in writing they had been destroyed. I'd rather do it that way otherwise they might be just thrown out with the general rubbish as has been discovered recently with more than one bank!!
