Can a TV tuner be added to a monitor without one?

As far as I'm aware a monitor with a TV tuner feature allows the user to watch TV on the PC monitor without having to have the PC running.
Is it possible to add a TV tuner to a TFT monitor so that the monitor can be used to watch TV without the PC switched on?
Or is a TV tuner a feature that must already be with the monitor as purchased?
Thanks..!

something like the above would do , with external tuner units , some can be used to plug in consoles also.
googel for lcd tv box , or external tuners , obviously usb is no good has to be a standalone unit.....maplin do em too.0 -
Depends what inputs the monitor has - normally RGB, but may have a composite input. If it has composite, you can use a VCR as a tuner (scart to composite lead needed). That's the one I know which works - may also be possible to get scart to RGB leads and do the same, but never looked for them.0

I'm not too sure.
Would you know if this E228WFP Dell monitor has a RGB or composite input? http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/e228wfp?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhssomething missing0 -
I bought a LCD TV Box made by Gadmei on Ebay about a year ago to use with spare LCD computer monitor
Mains powered with remote control, has built in analogue tuner so I use with Freeview box
Make sure you get the deluxe version with high resolution output - 1280 x 1024 rather than VGA or SVGA output0 -
Looks like it just has the standard computer RGB and DVI connectors. A bit of a discussion herehttp://union.surrey.ac.uk/discussions/index.php?topic=1018.msg18202 may give you some ideas, and an active converter at Maplins (£60) http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37141&criteria=scart%20to%2015%20pin%20rgb&doy=11m8
[edit] just had a look at the Gadmei - looks like it would do the same job as a PC card with PC on or off (VCR + converter would be several times the price).0 -
Thanks for that ManAtHome I'll take a look at those links now. ThanksI bought a LCD TV Box made by Gadmei on Ebay about a year ago to use with spare LCD computer monitor
