Before I bought my steam generator iron I tried my d-i-l's to see if I liked it. Hers had a button under the handle that you had to keep pressed in for the steam to be released through the soleplate. I found that a bit uncomfortable.

I ended up buying a Philips one (around £50 from Makro) which has a button on the top of the handle that locks the steam. You just pull it back to lock the steam then release it to stop the steam. It's absolutely brilliant and no finger-ache from holding the steam button in like my d-i-l!

I don't know if any other make has a steam lock button but worth looking out for.
