WORD problem - Backspace button

When using WORD, you highlight text and either delete it with the Backspace button or just start typing and it overwrites what was highlighted. Right?

Well on my 5 month old PC, with Office 2003, and on my 20-month old laptop with Office XP, this no longer works. My 5 year old PC, with WORD 2000 (w98), carries on as normal, as does another 3 year old PC at work.

Any ideas what's happened and how I can get it to work properly gratefully received.

Sorry, I'm being dim, but which bit doesn't work?

Can you highlight the text? If yes, does neither backspace, delete or overtype work? Or just one of those that doesn't work?

Try Tools/Options/Edit and change the replace text option...

That did the trick - many thanks ednotdave. Can't understand how or when that option changed!

I'm not quite sure what you're describing, but sometimes accidentally knocking the insert button will cause text just to overwrite all the time, rather than push existing stuff along.
If i'm nowhere near even the right problem, just ignore my ramblings
