I belong to a local sailing club and all my details are in the club handbook, so I've a fairly relaxed view about my own personal details. As a single woman I wouldn't expect anyone to turn up unannounced on my doorstep and that does sound creepy.

The other day some friends saw another mutual old friend of ours with whom we'd lost contact: they still checked whether it was OK for them to pass on my new number.

Not sure about the legalities of an informal group of people (rather than a business or other organisation) sharing personal details, but it's well out of order to do it without permission IMO. I'd be furious about it, and am surprised that there are still people around who think it's OK to give out your address without asking. Most people who've been in employment during the last 20 or so years have been made aware of the DPA via the workplace: I've been given countless information sheets and training on the subject through work and volunteer involvement over the years.
From my memory, since I studied the DPA as part of my degree back in the 1990's (pre-1998 version), and have done a refresher since starting my new job last month, any organisation that wishes to hold personal data must register with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and obtain a registration number which must then be shown on their website or provided on request.

There are precious few exemptions to this requirements, and I'm sure that being a charity isn't one of them.

I am not listed on the public electoral roll so not readily 'findable' that way. Which was one of the reasons we are not publically listed as we value our privacy, unless we know people very well and/or let people know where we live and invite them to our place, we prefer to meet them in public places like the pub!

KMA I have taken on board peoples comments on my previous post, and probably will modify my views.
However if you are on the electoral register, it is available for public scrutiny. Most likely in you public library.
There is an Open register which you can opt out of, this is sold to businesses etc.
There are very limited circumstances in which you can register anonymously, but I guess this doesn't apply.
I am not a cat (But my friend is)
