I wonder how much this problem has exacerbated since paramedics can only now be recruited from those who've done a Paramedic course at university or those who are recruited via the Student Paramedic route whose numbers are, I believe, minimal?

    NB

Unlike Nursing and other health service courses, Paramedic degrees aren't normally eligible for free tuition fees and bursaries but are funded by the student loan route.

What is the point in all of this? Why refuse to increase UK based paramedics pay, but then pay an extra £11,000 to import someone precisely because those you refused to increase the pay of are leaving?

I bring this up as it's all related to the millions extra were now paying on agency workers in the NHS (on the news yesterday) all because we simply refuse to increase the pay in the sector so fewer and fewer choose the profession.

A very good point - quite shocking really. Makes me wonder how many other professions this is happening in... a scary thought!
To err is human, but it is against company policy.

In general, I think that we're increasingly going to need to allocate decent social housing to essential workers in London and the south east, moving away from needs based letting policies.

Why not give them a Dacha near the Black Sea while we're at it?

which public services are people reluctant to do even for more money than non state sector jobs?

Many people I know have made the choice to abandon stressful and/or dangerous careers in the public sector for less stressful roles in the private/voluntary sectors.
Teaching and Prison Service jobs spring to mind quickly.

difficult to argue against anecdotal 'evidence' without the full facts.

are teaching and prison service 'dangerous jobs?

Is being a teacher or prison officer in the private sector any less stressful than doing the same job in the public sector. For sure the pay is a lot less in the private sector when you factor in the pensions.....
    I think....

I doubt that being a prison officer in the private sector is much different from being one on the public sector. Teaching in a private school, however, is almost a totally different job from teaching in most comprehensives.

Unless the rules have changed very recently teachers in the private sector can also be in the same teachers Pension scheme as public sector with the same rules.
