Can anyone recommend a decent conveyancing solicitor?

If you can't get a recommendation from a friend I'd recommend phoning round a few local comapnies - have a chat with each one and then go with your gut feeling. I had a more complcated house move than most - and at some points i was speaking with my conveyancer more often than my mum or my best friend - so they need to be someone you can have a conversation with!
This is what I did and my solicitor is brilliant, he's not the cheapest but he works like lightening and has a wicked sense of humour.0 -
Find out the details of the seller's solicitor and then appoint the one a few doors down.0

Another +1 for RMNJ. Used them for a recent sale / purchase and land purchase with overage. Excellent throughout and always responsive whether via email or telephone. Plus they were £1000 cheaper than the cheapest local solicitor quote I had.0

Ensure that you can speak to the fee earner, who is managing your property transaction.
Choose a regulated Solicitor and a good starting point is on the Law Society website.
Or Compare conveyancing quotes online. The Solicitor doesn't have to be local and Solicitors in the North are cheaper simply because the cost of living in the North is less.
Is there anyone on your road that has a Sold sign ! maybe they could help you with a recommendation0 -
+1 RMNJ, pretty professional and efficient
However one word of caution, if your applying for a mortgage ENSURE they are on the panel of solicitors/conveyancers.
Worse thing to do is waste your money on instructed solicitor A when the lender doesn't accept them."It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

I've used Matt Life at Wansbroughs in Wiltshire a few times. http://www.wansbroughs.com/
Not the cheapest, but worth every single penny. On our last transaction, he cut our Stamp Duty by tens of thousands of pounds by showing us how to claim mixed use for our garden (5 acres), rather than the bog standard residential stamp duty rate0 -
Is it advisable to look for the ones to offer NO WIN, NO LEGAL FEE service?
Also, we are considering purchasing Home Buyers Protection to avoid losing money if we are being gazumped. Does it worth buying it?
Ermm….what are you winning? This sort of arrangement doesn't usually apply for conveyancing.
They don't need to be local.0
