Offer letter hasn't come

An offer has been accepted on a property and estate agent confirmed all over the phone but I haven't received anything in writing yet. It has been just over a week.
When I asked the estate agent they said they'd send the offer letter out once they got both parties solicitor details. Why?
I gave them my solicitor details next day but apprantely the vender hasn't.
Should I hang on until I receive the offer letter before applying for mortgage?

Are you waiting for written confirmation of your offer, or the Memorandum Of Sale?

The latter confirms the sale/purchase details, and the two parties and their solicitors. A copy goes to all four.

If it is the MOS, it can't be issued until the agent has both sets of solicitor details.

I applied for my mortgage the day after I had my offer accepted.

I had my mortgage confirmed 2 weeks and 5 days after I had made the offer.

My solicitor had still not received anything at all relating to our purchase.

He finally received a written acceptance of my offer and the package containing title deeds/searches etc 3 weeks and 2 days after we had our offer accepted.

I would apply for my mortgage just now - it can take on average about 6 weeks. And there is no charge to apply for your mortgage.

You should not apply for a mortgage nor commit to any expense until the chain is fully formed and your vendor is progressing their purchase.

FTBs can go charging off and often end up with a mortgage offer weeks before it is needed and sometimes find they expire earlier than everyone else's in the chain as a result.

Our mortgage offer was valid for 6 months, I guess thats not the same with all lenders then.

Some as short as three months.

Until the vendor commits to an onward purchase (where where there is to be one) any expenditure is potentially wasted as the prospects remain high that the vendor will end up withdrawing from the market unable to find what they are looking for...

    Thanks all for your replies.
I'm waiting for my offer confirmation letter.
It's been 2weeks, I decide to apply for the mortgage when the lender find their property.

They probably haven't sent it out as vendor hasn't had an offer accepted on a property yet?

EA told us that they had sent out the Offer confirmation, but I later received it along with a copy of Sale Memorandum, when vendor had their offer accepted.
