Reading another person's thread relating to SORN etc. I'm a little concerned I might find myself in similar difficulty, so would appreciate a bit of advice.

The insurance runs out on my car on 12th June. I had to relinquish my licence for medical reasons but am anticipating it will be reinstated to enable me to drive again on 28th June.

My car is taxed until the end of the year.

I cannot renew my car insurance because I don't have a current licence. I have been told that I will have to declare my car SORN from 12th June, when I will receive a tax refund (from 1st July on). When I get my licence back I then re-tax it - effectively from 1st June.

Apart from the fact that I will actually have paid tax twice for June, the most important thing is I have to go through all this performance for about 16 days, when the car will be in my garage, safe & sound and off the road!

If I don't SORN it I shall be liable for a fine, but by the time DVLA SORN it, refund my tax, it'll be time to reverse the process, and I'm worried they might take longer than 16 days to act on the SORN/refund. Anybody know how long the DVLA take to act on a SORN?

Taxing a car online is instant. Presumably sorn is the same. You may have to fund the new tax before the refund is received.
You could tax it from july 1 to avoid paying twice.

More importantly, have you told your insurers?

Thank you, I'm hoping it will be instant if done online.

I probably will tax it from 1st July - seems a bit rich to have to pay tax twice for one month!

Yes, both my current insurers (who retired my policy relating to driving the car but kept it covered for fire and theft), and my proposed new insurers.

I've even offered to have a voluntary restriction placed on a new policy until I produce my licence once it's reinstated, but they say that's not possible.

Try a broker I've seen a policy for any driver excluding the policy holder.

That's an idea - thanks. I'll look into doing that, although I have a feeling it might be a bit costly.
