My old Black and Decker grass strimmer finally gave up the ghost (hurrah) so I am looking for a new one.

It was a gift years ago but I never really liked it but since it was a gift!

The strimmer line kept breaking if I got too close to the ground or if a stone got in the way when edging the grass round the paving slabs.

Any suggestions for a new one that doesn't have that problem?

I bought this one last month:

I'm a complete novice, never used a strimmer before, but I find it easy. The house I've recently moved into had a really overgrown lawn, lots of hidden paving stones and bits of tree that were hidden, and this coped well with it.

I got replacement lines from here:

Not needed to use the replacements yet, but have them ready and waiting.

I use it with an extension lead with RCD for safety, and it's light enough for a middle-aged woman like me to use without difficulty.

I have nothing to compare it with as I've never used a strimmer before, but it seems very powerful.

EDIT: And I paid more for it last month!

I have a Bosch cordless as the old one with the lead needed three connectors in places and I lost the plot with it anyway as it constantly needed rethreading and the lawn was always covered with bits of blue plastic. As I have solar panels it costs me nothing to recharge it if I am careful to do it when the sun shines! I can get all my garden done now on one charge, now that it's back to manageable. Instead of plastic cord the Bosch uses a little plastic blade.

I don't think you're ever going to stop the string breaking on a strimmer. A little bit of string is always going to lose a fight with a lump of concrete.

I have a Flymo Contour XT. That has an automatic line feed system that feeds out a little bit of line every time you start it up. The idea is that in normal use, it just keeps replacing the tips of the strings as they wear away. Any excess string is chopped off by a metal pin.

Most of the time, the auto-feed works fine. Sometimes, it doesn't and you have to manually open up the feeder and unspool some line.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I have a Flymo strimmer and edger. Had it for about 10 years and still going strong.
I've only had to replace the strimmer wire about 4 times as it's very strong and hardly ever breaks.
