Help with car insurance.

Hello all, so recently my sons car has broken down and i have been keeping it on the road (insured, taxed and mot'd) until i had the time to fix it. Today i was driving past and noticed someone has ran straight into the front of his car. My question is am i still able to claim for this or not because the car was a non runner? thanks a lot.

Yes you can claim if you have comprehensive cover. The only difference the fact that it needed repairs might make is that the insurance company won't pay more than the value of the car for it to be repaired - and the value will obviously be reduced if it was a non-runner at the time of the accident. This will also affect the size of the cheque you get if it turns out to be a write off.

Also the insurance company will pay to repair the damage that was caused by the hit and run - but obviously they won't pay for whatever general maintenance/repairs the car already needed before the hit and run.

If it's your son's car and you're the one insuring it then presumably the insurers are aware of the fact that your son's the main driver?
