Hi, My boyfriend has a provisional license and is trying to get car insurance as the named 2nd driver on his fathers car, who is 77. He has had over 20 years of no claims but hasn't had any insurance for a couple of years so the price has rocketed. Will it be cheaper for my boyfriend to get insurance on a provisional license? Do u know of any good companies for over 70's insurance. Much appreciated as the quotes are literally astronomical.
Thank you
Thank you

Has your BF never had a licence?
Is it the father with 20 years no claims? How long ago was it last insured?
I would say SAGA car insurance are worth a look.
Provisional insurance is usually a lot cheaper than when you come to take out a full policy in your own name, so be prepared for even higher quotes after he passesChanging the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
No my BF has never had a licence, it is his father who had 20 years plus of no claims, the last time he had insurance was 3 years ago.0

Over three years ago or just under?
Co-op let you use a NCB if it's less than 3 years old, most companies it's 2.Your selected question
Q:Do I need to provide evidence of my No Claim Discount?
A:Yes, if you choose to take out a policy with us we will need you to provide evidence of your No Claim Discount earned in your name.
This proof will normally be your renewal document from your most recent UK insurer, showing the number of years No Claim Discount earned. We only accept original proof from UK insurers.
The document must show:
• The number of years No Claim Discount earned
• The expiry date of your last insurance policy.
We are unable to consider the following documents for proof of No Claim Discount:
• Photocopies or faxes
• Certificate of motor insurance
• Insurance quotations
• Statement of Facts
• Proof of No Claim Discount already used on another policy
• If the proof is over three years old.
Your discount can only be used on one policy at a time. It cannot be shared across two or more policies.
If there has been a gap since your previous motor insurance expired, we will require a covering letter providing the reason for the break in cover.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

Do remember also that while he can be a learner on his dad's car, if he's going to be the main driver after passing the test he needs to change it to being the driver with the dad as a named. I would be surprised it this didn't flag up the insurer given the age of the dad and the fact he hasn't driven for 2 years then is suddenly wanting to insure his car as a driver with his son on it
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
