You appear to be getting somewhat confused looking at the info you have posted on this thread and the other one you started on the Benefits & Tax Credits board. There is no "our" tax return, it's either yours or, more likely from your other thread, your hubbies.
What seems to have happened is that you have applied for Marriage Allowance and your husband has now received the benefit of this for 2015:16. Your husbands tax repayment has been sent to your bank account (see other thread for possible reasons for this). You are not going to get a tax refund, assuming you have applied then you are either no worse off (lots of spare tax allowances) or you could in theory owe some money to HMRC (some spare allowances but not as many as the amount transferred to hubby from the Marriage Allowance claim).
Your hubby cannot* get the benefit of the Marriage Allowance for 2016:17 until he sends in his self assessment return to HMRC. The marriage allowance will reduce his 2016:17 tax liability by upto £220.
* he could already have had the benefit via his tax code if he has PAYE earnings as well as his self employment0 -
Just to say that we followed the guidance about 2 weeks ago and this morning my amended tax code arrived. So thanks to you and well done to HMRC!0

Hello all,
Quick question on this one....my wife went over the £11,500 personal allowance on 1st January 2017.
Can we look at getting the marriage tax allowance that was due between April 2015 and January 2017 reimbursed now and if so how would we do that.
Appreciate that its not applicable now but there was a 20 month period when it was.
regards

If you google marriage allowance it will show a link to start the application.
However if you want to also give your husband £1000 I am sure he would be very happy😀0 -
Wondering if you lovely people could help, I transferred my allowance to my husband last year and his tax code changed to M, looking at this months wage slip his code is back to L, do I need to re-apply as I thought it was on going, there as been no change to our circumstances? It all depends on what years you applied for. If you actually applied during the year you were applying for then it does normally carry on into the next year.
Probably worth getting hubby to check his tax code using his personal tax account. If this still includes the marriage allowance then maybe his employer has done something wrong but if not then time to phone HMRC for an explanation.
Has your tax code for this year kept the N letter at the end?0 -

Short answer is no, more detailed response on the new thread you started.0 -
Applying for the MA:
Husband and I are filing online for the first time this year. We haven't applied for MA before, but want to do so for the 2016/2017 tax year.
On p5 of the SA100 there's a section on MA which explains MA and the conditions and has two statements: "Fill in this section if you want to make the transfer" and "Fill in this section if you want to receive the transfer". This suggests that filling in the required info on both tax returns would constitute an application for MA.
Is this so, or is it still necessary to apply for MA directly to HMRC as a separate action before submitting our tax returns?
Thanks for your time.0
