  • Yeah my wife made the application not me. =).
  • She’s applied and she earns £0. I earn around £31000/32000. Glad I read before I applied and done it in her name. Cheers for the advice guys.

as long as you are basic rate tax payer and she earns less then 10k (i believe) or doesnt work at all you can get marriage allowance, about £240 a year

Does anyone know if marriage allowance becomes worth more per year for the 2019/2020 tax year?

    Yes,

The applicant has £1,250 less Personal Allowance (up from £1,190 in the current tax year).

The receiver gets a tax deduction off their tax liability of upto £250 (up from £238 in the current year)

You can get Marriage Allowance if both parties are each earning £40k.

You can usually only benefit (as a couple) if one has income under the Personal Allowance. Although if the applicant has savings interest or dividend income then they could have much more income and it would still be worthwhile applying.
  • I got married in May 2018, and my wife just done the claim last night, will that get backdated and how would it get paid?!

You will only be eligible for the current year and later years.

It will come through your wages.

An updated tax code should be sent to your employer and you will get a one off adjustment in your tax the first time they use the new tax code and will then pay a little less each month thereafter (approx £20/month less).
  • My partner works abroad and pays tax abroad, is it possible to transfer her personal tax allowance/ marriage allowance over to me?
  • Hi all. Hopefully someone can help me, as HMRC are harder than a soup sandwich to get hold of.

I have not worked or claimed any benefits since 24th Nov 2016, and have been told we can claim backdated marriage allowance for the period via my husband (who earns beneath the ~£46k). However, I start a new job on Monday (28/1/19) and am concerned that putting in a claim now will screw around with my husband's tax code and mine for the foreseeable future. Is there a way to claim it without either of us changing our codes? (As we'll immediately be changing them back once i start work).

    I hope this makes sense!

    TIA
