I have a good pal who is a mechanic and when I have purchased second hand cars in the past always took him with me to check them over, If you know your mechanic well enough ask them and if not look for someone you know who has more knowledge about cars to help you out.0

Thanks unfortunately don't have a tame mechanic and only person know who is car minded lives abroad - not sure he could help over Skype!0

Ok then - I would probably look at reputable garages if this is the case and see what options are on offer and if you can afford it look at a car with a warranty.0

The AA and RAC both offer inspections. I also would have suggested a friendly local mechanic ( much cheaper ) but I see you've already said you don't know one.0

Reputable garages is a bit of an oxymoron is it not? I have visited most of the local garages in area and only had one I really liked. Unfortunately they are unlikely to have a car that suits due to the range the make they deal with produce.
All the cars I have looked at have some kind of warranty and as looking for 1-2 year old car have balance of manufacturers warranty. However bit cynical when it comes to warranties i.e. they seem to try and wriggle out of them. Plus no warranty against the hassle factor.Ebe_Scrooge wrote: »The AA and RAC both offer inspections.
