advice appreciated!

i have a 2 and a bit year old and my other half works full time i am a full time mummy until my boy starts school full time - we claim housing benefit - we had a review lady came round etc - we have always always given them all they ask for etc i got a letter this morning saying they had overpaid us 1671.58 due to working tax credit and increased child tax credit - then i got a letter saying 50 odd pounds will be paid into my bank on such and such date when it is normally 200 do they think we can live like this? it was not our mistake was it? yet we have to pay for it if they had got it right in the first place! any advice shall i just have to go with it and sort out a payment plan and suffer for months and months until its paid or do i take it further? they know the law so i guess i will just have to sort out a plan just seems so unfair how do so many other dodgey people get away with so much and honest straight forward claims like ours arghhhh we have given them everything any changes in our finances we have told them :(

Did you inform Housing benefits when your tax credit claim increased ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • our tax credits have always been 103 for my other half and 200 and something for child tax credits nothing has changed i think it is because when my son was born the first payment went into my bank they had a computer system crash and we have had it on giro slip ever since i have never know the amounts change i have informed them about what happened several times and asked if we could have it paid into the bank like the first payment and they said they coult not do this :(
