Nope, I could have sworn that your post (seduLOUs) came between some earlier ones, but I was wrong. Oh well, I repeated myself for nothing.

I can only say from a couple of schools point of view but if a child is only a couple of minutes late for an exam they are still able to complete it. I think they can arrive (officially) up to half an hour late. I had one student arrive 18 minutes late yesterday due to traffic and the time was just added onto the end.

Relax if you are stressing over it I'm sure your son is as well which isn't going to help in his exams.
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada

Thanks, sazaccount. :) Stress is over for this year (apart from waiting for the results!), and I have ample warning for next year when he will be taking the bulk of his GCSEs.

Good luck to your son for his exam results in August. If he does really well, you may find your nearest school will be very happy to help next year with transportation to exams. In my children's secondary school a number of children with parents from Portugal have private tutoring outside of school for GCSE portuguese and take their GCSE exams for this in the school. The school school publishes these results in their league table, although they have never been taught this in school. Last year the 8 students who took the GCSE portuguese exam got A* and A grades. They also don't teach spanish (French or Italian only) but had 16 students with achieved GCSE grades A*-B in spanish.

That's cheeky, to claim the results for their own league tables! When I was at school I had to argue to be allowed to do an unusual combination which they couldn't fully timetable (meaning I had less teaching for it than normal) - they let me in the end, on the condition that if I did badly, it wouldn't be included in the school's results. I did well, and they had no qualms including my results! ;)

Anyway, yours is a good idea that may help someone else, but not an option for us. The exam centre we're using is the second closest to home. The very closest is the school he used to attend (we started home ed in his Year 8). We didn't have a very bad relationship wtih them, and they did say we could use them as an exam centre, but he strongly didn't want to - and I can understand that, turning up with all his former classmates and facing all their questions, on a GCSE morning! I'd find it daunting too. He sees his friends and they're well past that questioning stage, but this would be the whole year group.

I did also ask the school about having him attend for just some subjects (thinking of maths mainly), as I know that happens in some places. A bit like those you mention doing Portuguese, but at another school that does offer it. They said it wasn't an option. Again, I'm mentioning this as an idea that may be useful to someone else reading this thread in the future. :)

Thanks for the good wishes! His maths tutor emailed today to ask how he found the last paper, and was pretty complimentary about his ability so that's reassuring while we wait.
  • I was once staying in a hotel, and pre booked a taxi the night before to take me to an appointment which had been paid for.

I waited in the hotel reception for the taxi and it never showed. Called them to check up on it, and it turned out that the driver had showed up 10 minutes early, shouted "taxi for Mr Sausage" and some opportunistic !!!!!! said "that's me" and took the cab.

By the time they could get another taxi to me at the busy time of the morning, it was going to be too late and I missed the appointment costing me a lot of money.

The taxi company pretty much shrugged off my complaint and denied having any kind of liability for the losses I had incurred.

Not really. The league tables are derived from the results of all examinations administered at that school not just the results from exams taken by its pupils.

Sounds a bit naughty. I've never really thought about it but whenever I've phoned a local taxi for pickup at a place other than a residence they've always asked when I got in the car where I had booked to go to which didn't make much sense at the time - perhaps this is a check to prevent the booking being stolen by someone else!

I hadn't realised that. Strange though when you think about it. :)

I don't know how the system works but it could be that the actual figures are provided by the exam boards based on the exam centre number rather than any other criteria.
