Cold-called, suspected a scam?

Hi all - I got cold-called by 0587955555 and an Indian sounding lady said she was from PPI RECLAIMS. I wanted to humour them knowing fine well not to give out my personal details, so I continued the call. They knew who I was, my address and (obviously) phone number. They said I had a loan between 2005-2009 and told me an amount and said it was from Lloyds TSB - the trouble is I don't remember if I did or not, I may have.

Anyway, she put me through to a man with a Newcastle accent who said the line was bad and he called me back using 01914067097. He again gave me these details and said some info would be sent to me through the post. BUT ... he then asked for my date of birth and mothers' maiden name for security. I told him I wasn't prepared to give that information over the phone and I offered to give him something different but he said that the call couldn't proceed without that information so wished me well and terminated the call.

So - 1) do you think it was a scam? 2) Did I REALLY have a loan from 2005-2009 with Lloyds TSB? I'm sure I've had other loans before but I have NO IDEA who they were with or when ... can I find that out?

When one thought a CMC could not sink lower one goes a bit lower. It's about time these companies were properly and robustly regulated and were made to charge equitible fees in proprtion to the work they carry out.

You could always ask Lloyds Bank.

P.S. I wonder what would have happened had you responded by giving them a false date of birth and mothers' maiden name? :)

Try 29 February in any odd numbered year - or 31 April, June, September or November.

Tell them your loan was with the Porcine Aerobatic Bank (as in flying pig)

I did actually wonder that. I should have done so to see what happened.

Pick one of the 4 big banks, tell someone they had PPI on a loan/CC and there is a fair chance they may have done - that then suggests that the CMC has some insider knowledge to encourage you to sign up with them - the fact they were lying to you is all the more proof of why no-one should use a CMC

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
