Tax on Maternity leave! So confused, please help!

Hi,

We are due to have our first baby in September and are frantically saving and budgeting to get us through and allow for me to take the full year off.
I have a beautiful spreadsheet but I am so so confused by the tax and national insurance. I wonder if anyone can help me fathom it all out!!??

Here are the basics of my pay.
Earnings - £33500

Personal tax allowance - £10600
Company Car benefit - -£3860
Comapny car fuel benefit - -£4199
Medical insurance benefit: -£841
Underpayment restriction : -£337
Final tax allowance = £1363.

I get 18 weeks on full pay.
22 weeks on Statutory Maternity Pay.
14 weeks with nothing.

I have several questions......
How much tax will I be paying on the weeks where I am on statutory maternity pay? I am eligable for £139.58 per week SMP.
How much national Insurance will I be paying while on SMP?

I assume they wont take anything from me on the weeks that I am on nothing?

Or how do I work these things out?

Then, we have a further problem. My company car is going to be changed. I am keeping it, and the fuel allowance for when I am on mat leave because my husband can use it everyday for his 2hr round trip commute. It works out cheaper than us buying another car.

However, my company car is going to be changed to one that pushes me £2000 over the £10600 personal tax allowance. How much tax will I then pay? How do I work that out? How will the tax be taken when I'm on mat leave?

They say tax doesnt have to be taxing....but I am utterly and totally lost and confused. Can anyone shed any light? Please help a hormonal pregnant lady! :-)

Thank you!!

I think we need some more info to help you with the tax

    1. is Earnings - £33500 your annual taxable salary ?

    2. What date does your car change ?
Your tax code will need to be recalculated to take into account the change of car before you can work out the tax.

    3. do you know the annual taxable benefit for the new car and fuel ?
You have given us the old car annual figures in your tax code and these will need to be reduced up to the date that car ceases. The new car and fuel benefit will then be apportioned from the date you get it to the end of the tax year on 5 April.

    4. are you paid weekly or calendar monthly?

    5. is your taxable pay before deductions the same every week/month ?

    6. what date do you go on maternity leave?

We need to try and recalculate your tax code and work out what tax rate you will be liable at.

Sorry cant help on national insurance - perhaps someone with more knowledge will come along here and advise you, otherwise there is some info here that may help
