Hiding tv wires behind wall

Hi, I'm thinking of mounting my tv on a wall and hiding the wires behind the wall. I've done a bit of research but was wondering if anybody knew the safest way to do this? Ive read some stuff that says it's not safe to run hdmi and power cables behind a wall so there you have to buy in wall cable managment wall plates. If this is the case I'm struggling to find these kits anywhere... Anybody done this? If so please share your experience.
Cheers

We haven't done this- but the previous owners of our house have. We have something like this http://www.screwfix.com/p/tower-mini-trunking-38mm-x-25mm-x-2m-8m-pack-of-4/84619 and it doesn't look too bad0

Thanks for your reply... I'm looking to run the wire behind the wall rather than have trunking0 -
Well I have an internal garage. So the Virgin media cable goes to the garage and comes in behind tv . This also the exit/ entry point for all other cables and wires. ( DVD player/power ) Boxes are in a disused chimney place with a false wall
Therefore ALL wires are hidden.
Took a little planning but works well.0 -
Hi Wallbash, how does it work with remotes if your boxes are behind a false wall? do you run into problems? Thinking of doing something similar.0

You need a chasing tool to make channel. Get on over to avforums, loads of threads there regarding this.0

you can get more decorative trunking which would look ok in a living room than the industrial white ones linked aboe which are for offices.

It's not a good idea to chisel away at walls to put recessed wire channels in as it can weaken the walls.0 -

Did not explain very well .
I have / had a fireplace on a flat wall. Chimney stack on the flank wall. Then a double garage was built on that side of the house.
So I built a black box , suitable for a Virgin box and a dvd player ( two shelves.) this reasonably small box slides into a false wall covering the fireplace.. Then the large flat screen was mounted above box.
All wires are routed to garage OR up behind the false wall via back of the small black box holding boxs.
Painted black to hide any visible wires etc.
to sum up , all you see is the front of a customized box ( no wires ) and a flat screen tv ( no wires)
Ps if this is still confusing , would be glad to post a picture, fairly proud of my result.0 -
We converted our barn and have all of our TV and audio systems under the stairs in a purpose built cupboard - Sky, DVD, Freeview, iPod etc.
Each room has a wall plate much like a light switch which is infrared and touch screen. It allows us to use the remote controls or touch to select which source you want i.e. TV or music. All of our wires including HDMI are behind the plaster. Behind each wall hung TV is an HDMI socket, digital aerial socket and electric sockets.
You can do it, but much depends on what type of structure you have i.e. will you have to 'chase the walls' or do you have a timber frame construction?0 -
