What weight will a van carry?

I'm lending a van to take some slabs to the tip.
Each slab weighs 32kg and the van is a 3.5 ton

Does that mean it can carry 31 slabs?
3500 divided by 32 =31

Seems an awful lot of slabs to me.

My slabs are only half size but I do have about 25 of them so I'm hoping should be fine.

The gross weight of the van is 3500kg so that includes the van slabs and you.

Find the kerb weight and deduct that from the 3500kg to give you a guide to what it will carry.

A 3.5t van will weigh roughly 2t so you can carry roughly 1.5t.

Just noticed your sums OP, 31 slabs at 32kg each is about 1 ton so you should be ok.

Before you go there does your tip accept vans just turning up?

Ours won't allow vans, pickups or trailers without booking first. They think a van is dumping commercial waste, and try to charge unless you have an appointment.

In my area you need a pass off the council before you can tip, you get 12 visits a year in your own van or one off pass for a hire van.

    3500 divided by 32 = 109.375 when I was in school!

Also, do you really mean lending, or borrowing?

Dont forget that as well as the gross load weight there will be axle loading limits also. So you may need to spread that load about.

A few years back my OH was at the local garden centre (I wasn't there) and decided that she'd like a dozen slabs for a small paved area. So she bought them and a helpful staff member helped her load them into her boot.

She was driving a 746cc Daf variomatic at the time - aparently it was a little sluggish on the way home :D

So, yes, OP, a 3.5 ton van will carry them without a problem. Whether legally or not, you'd have to check the kerb weights etc as previously mentioned but you'll probably be ok.

Same in my area where vans need a permit to use dumps, hire van or not, limited to 12 visits in a year.
Round here slabs would go in a rubble section which they also limit to how much each person can put in to around 3 bags full or something like a dozen slabs.
