Newly fitted double glazing cracked within 6 months

The crack runs from the upper edge (i.e. the join between the main pane and the upper opening section) towards the middle of the pane. Even to my untrained eye its definitely not been an impact - there's no other scratches or imperfections from where a hypothetical blow might have landed. Personally, I would hope that a modern double glazing unit should be strong enough to cope with most minor blows that might happen in an average house, maybe that's just me though.

The fitter turned up and took new measurements so he could order a replacement. He grumbled about how it was going to cost him, and started talking about us paying £30 to cover some of the cost. I was non-committal for now, so we'll deal with that once the replacement is in place. For some reason he doesn't think the manufacturer will cover the cost, and he didn't seem interested in even asking. For the sake of £30 I might just pay it, but it does feel wrong, and he wasn't exactly friendly (considering how many emails and messages its taken to get to this point, he clearly has never heard of customer service!).

Did you pay via credit card by any chance?

You are correct that your contract is with the fitter and the goods he supplied are defective.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

£30 is likely the full cost of the pane, with him just covering fitting cost...

    Nope, paid by cheque.

Figured as much, I guessed he was trying it on a bit, he claimed it was to "cover the VAT" which doesn't really make much sense.
