Car Insurance Renewal Haggling

Hi, I have had a renewal price for my car insurance with Bell at £308 which is much lower than than other insurers have quoted through various comparison sites. The cheapest being £361. However, can anyone suggest how I could reduce the renewal price further even though I can't threaten to leave because they are the cheapest anyway?

Thanks.

Most the Admiral Group will just discount if you simply tell them that you've seen cheaper elsewhere and what they can do. Normally you can skirt their questions of who and how much and they still knock ~20% off

Have you tried the ones that aren't on comparison sites?

Yes, they are all more than the cheapest I can find on comparison sites.

Lol, I asked to change my car earlier, with the admiral group. As I was within the "renewal cycle" I got put through to renewals instead. As their best price was over twice the price of the best on gocompare I declined and simply changed my vehicle, for which I was clearly told there would be no charge.

Two hours later I'm getting emails saying I'd better have £366 in my account for them, (they quoted £480 renewal when others were £180). No idea where they got this figure from. I clearly told them to cancel renewal and amend existing.

Rudekid has the right idea. If the govt' isn't fining you then the insurers will rob you blind.

You already have the best price and you want to screw it down even more.

Cue the post in 6 months time "Bell charged me an £50 admin fee this is so unfair!!!!"

The price is the price don't get cheap on something important...

Interestingly my quote went down by adding commuting whereas I just use it for SD&P.

Best to play around with an online quote and see what makes it go up or down. Insuring for commuting means I would be insured if I was to drive to a fixed place of work but am not obliged to drive to work.

Also, multi-car insurance also tends to work well.

Shame the guaranteed to beat you renewal schemes have disappeared. They worked a treat.
  • As suggested on the site, ten days before renewing my car insurance I shopped around and found a quote for £247, as opposed to £279 from existing insurer. I emailed my existing insurer (Octagon) asking them if they would match the quote. After three days, I called them and they said they'd tried to ring (but didn't leave a message) and they would call me back. More of the same, with me emailing or calling daily, right up to renewal date. At this point I asked Octagon if they would match the quote and they said no. When I went back to the cheaper quote (AXA), it had gone up to £280, so I was not amused. As the car was effectively no longer insured, I had to deal with it quickly and so my 'haggling' ended up costing me £32 rather than the other way round.
