Get him a cheap smartphone like the Moto G for £95, and stick the free Here maps app on it. Then he can use it as a dedicated satnav device. It will do the same job as a standalone satnav for half the price, with a higher quality display and longer lasting battery. You won't need a data connection or even a SIM card as the maps can be used offline. The maps will be kept up to date as they can be updated via your home wifi when you need to. And it will charge from any microUSB car charger.hi everybody thinking of buying my father a new satnav for fathers day is this a good model to buy him

Standalone satnavs are obsolete these days.

**Popy10** Sorry to spoil your rant, but devices in cars are normally plugged in to the accessory socket so the battery life dose not matter.
A cheaper option but still proper tools for a proper job, garmin nuvi 2559, pay about £140
Exactly what are the ongoing running costs using a mobile phone as a sat nav? Garmin give you free on going map & traffic updates.
Doing things your way, suppose like where I live you get to a turning to see there are some new road works so that road is blocked at the other end. Are you going to drive round looking for a library with internet access?0 -

You update the maps when you want to, on your home wifi. The rest of the time they are stored on your phone, ready for offline usepoppy100 -

Standalone
It would be a considerably smaller display than a dedicated unit.
I've had a garmin for years in various forms. Great little units. Whilst they arent as popular as they once were, they are by no means obselete.0 -
That seems a bit pricey, especially for a UK only model.
I've got the Nuvi 55 LMT, which covers UK and Europe.
It's a cracking piece of kit.
I paid £90 at Aldi, and it's available now from Amazon UK, for £100 less, than the model the OP has linked to.0 -

But have you compared the features of each unit? The more expensive unit may well have features worth paying for. It will certainly have more features than the one you bought from Aldi. You can't just go on price.Bedsit_Bob wrote: »That seems a bit pricey, especially for a UK only model.

The primary purpose of a satnav is, to successfully get you from point A to point b, which the 55 LMT does very efficiently and easily.
It also, as mentioned, covers Europe, which, IMO, makes it superb, both as a satnav, and for the price.0
