Why is my grocery bill so high?

    Because the OP is consuming food quite quickly I wonder if it might be cheaper to actually go in store on a regular basis and pick up any reduced price bargains on meat, fruit and veg. Assuming the OP has the time and does not have to travel too far.

    That's a good idea.


    My take is that OP's overspend is because he's not just funding his food bill but funding an expensive hobby at the same time.


    I don't know a great deal about body building but I'd imagine that substitutes for protein etc could be suggested.

    Hi, newbie here and wondering if anyone can help me out.

    I currently live alone and am a guy in his 20s. I do my grocery shopping online weekly with Sainsburys (there is no Aldi, etc, in reasonable/economic distance, nearest place is an understocked and overpriced CoOp and Waitrose). I've used Asda, but they never have my foods in stock or have sloppy delivery services and Tesco online works out as either the same as or more than Sainsburys, so I stuck with Sainsburys them as they have pretty much everything in stock all the time.

    Problem is my food bill is coming in at £400 per month and this seems to be pretty high to me (it's becoming unaffordable!). I buy a lot of fresh and frozen and very few ready meals. Try to buy supermarket own brand where possible and organic as much as possible.

    Is this usually high for a single guy and if so, does anyone have any ideas?

    FWIW, I eat 6-7 meals per day but they are not "meals" as such


    hi without knowing what you eat each day its hard to say but me and hubby dont even spend that much each month and eat very well and healthy as well as a bottle of decent wine each week (possibly relying on supermarket delivery does not help your problem. try batch cooking, going to local butcher and grocers (if you buy in bulk they normally will do a deal) and herbs and spices from market or local grocer to (a lot of them freeze well so bear this in mind as local grocers are normally bigger amounts)

    My son is on a high protein diet due to bodybuilding but luckily I am close to all major supermarkets. I do check around where is cheapest for chicken and salmon and find its usually Aldi. We also buy their free range eggs box of 15 are £1.99. They may be cheaper if you have any local markets or farms nearby to go to them.

    He uses unsweetened almond milk with his protein shakes and I find out online where is cheapest and bulk buy - at the moment its 94p at Asda and £1.50 each at sainsburys. CO-OP nearly £2

    He doesn't eat organic so we save some money there. He often buys meat from muscle foods and you can find discount codes if you google - and I shop around for the cheapest nuts and dates.

    I guess its a lifestyle choice and if you don't live near enough to shop around you will have to decide if there is anything you are willing to compromise on if you cant afford it.

    This is probably the problem try to eat porridgefor breakfast (75p for a kilo in lidl/sains) then a cooked main meal or sarnies and fruit then a cooked meal at night - sure you'll save money. Buy a chicken for 4 quid and cook it whole for 2 meal/sarnies etc then the leftovers for curry etc. A slow cooker is great as you throw the chicken in with boiling stock and it cooks itself using a light-bulb amount of energy and you eat it anytime! good luck! also eat pasta 39p for a kilo with home made sauce from a 30p tin of toms or tuna.[/QUOTE]

    eating 3 meals whilst body building isn't going to work, the body needs more sustenance in smaller amounts more often to metabolise in the way it needs to be. Big meals will cause bloating and slow down digestion.

    It looks as though his bills are higher because of his b/building I doubt if I eat 6 eggs a week let alone for breakfast :)I live reasonably well on a budget of £60.00 per month and usually have cash left over at the end of the month,but then I am on my own and don't eat anywhere as much as a 20 year old body builder would being a little old lady :):):)

    Have you tried bulk buying from musclefood.com, Groupon have an offer on for them at the moment. Personally, I have not found online shopping that economical cost or time wise.
