Air conditioning units?

Options
We have recently had a new conservatory built and im looking at various portable air con systems that are available through BnQ, Wickes. They have the ability to heat as well as cool which suits our needs. Does anyone know if the units are actually any good at heating the ones ive seen are 12000 btu and 9000 btu if this helps. We are looking to spend no more than £250.

    I saw 12,000 BTU units recently in Focus or B & Q for £199 - been a bad year for sales !

    I have a 12,000 unit in my 21' X 12' lounge, which works well.
I must admit putting an AC unit in a conservatory seems to me a bit like trying to empty the Atlantic Ocean with a colander.
The main thing to do with one of these units is to vent it directly through the wall. This may be very difficult, if not impossible, in a conservatory where at the most you will have dwarf walls, if it isn't glazed right down to ground level.
If you start using the hose you just make the thing even more inefficient, half the heat you have just extracted from the room is re-radiated back into the room from the hose.

I have just had a conservatory built, cooling is by windows/door plus a fan, heating is a £16.99 thermostatic convector from a Focus sale.

I'd recommend something called an Xpelair Digitemp-you can google for them and they are very effective.

Don't buy a mobile unit that has a single outlet hose as they are quite inefficient. These units suck air from the room, warm it up and expel it up the hose.

The air removed from the room obviously needs to be replaced and this happens by warm air getting sucked in under doors and through windows etc!

You are far better buying something like the digitemp that is a sealed unit. There is a digitemp that actually heats and I seem to recall there is a tax break when buying one of these units (You get more heat out of the unit than electricity used to power it)
  • Hi,
You'll be better off buying the highest KWh you can afford for a conservatory, running costs are going to be similar to be honest, a 3KWh unit will run for about twice the amount of time as a 6KWh as it will have to work twice as hard. You may also find that if 3KWh isn't powerfull enough, due to solar gain it'll be on continiously as it won't be able to get down to the required temperature which can mean short product life.
