Why does everyone think they are going to get ripped off on ebay? It is the biggest money making machine this century and if you stick to the rules you will NOT get ripped off. I have over 1600 successful sales via ebay and have never been ripped off. Send everything by trackable means, give honest descriptions and personal collections by cash only. If you just follow these simple rules you will be OK. There are ebay millionaires out there for gods sake, they don't worry about scammers.

I have listed the same item three times this week due to stupid people doing buy it now and either cancelling their account or saying im from CA but i live in australia will you send the goods to nigeria tra la laa like im thick or something no i wont send it there but now ebay want me to pay listing fees and selling fees despite telling them that the three occasions the item sold it was to some dodgy nigerian who wont ever actually pay. i dont see why i should limit the countries i sell to, to just uk because the scammers dont usually come from anywhere but africa, although they register as an address in another country which means they would bypass any country ban i have. Ebay is ok for selling things of little value as they wouldnt want them they only want electrical stuff or things they can sell like phones, i dont get any nigerian scammers when i sell cheap and crappy mcdonald toys they all seem to appear when i start selling a pricey camera though dont they?! OH and DONT get me started on the spammers sending you email through ask the seller a question....im sick of the "hello friend thanks for visiting our website we sell...." Im not their friend and i wouldnt dream of visiting their dafty website.

qob, just a couple of points. Firstly for phones it really is best to stick to UK sales only as you can't insure them if you send them overseas so you run a real risk of them getting lost in the post.

Secondly, if you go through the NPB process you'll get your FVFs back, plus if you had waited before relisting, you would have got a relist credit for the basic listing fee.

You could try your local cashconverters? Don't really know the rules there but its a thought!

Either that or try ebay and monitor closely and have restrictions on the bidders....

Dave forgot to mention that cheques can bounce, or be recalled, so I thought I'd help out by pointing it out.

But provided you wait until they have cleared you'll have no worries.

Meanwhile it seems that paypal can snatch back the funds whenever they choose...

I think it is a stretch to say you have no worries although statistically you are probably correct.

Cleared for funds takes approx 3 working days, however exactly like paypal cheques do not clear against fraud for several months. I assume therefore you mean ship as soon as you have cleared funds on the understanding that there is an amittedly small risk cheque could still bounce.

From November this year thought things should get better as cheques will clear for fraud in 6 days as well:
