its happened twice in amonth now where the epc light had come on and ive lost all power in the car and its come to a halt-i turned the engine off, restarted and all is fine
its a polo 1.4 auto 54 plate
any advice on what it is and how much to repair?

It refers to the drive by wire throttle system being faulty.
It could be a stuck/faulty brake light switch, faulty pedal sensor, faulty throttle body sensor or a fault with the traction control system.
It usually means a trip to a garage to get a diagnosis and repair.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)
