Travel Insurance (asthma)

My husband was under the care of a chest consultant for Asthma late last year and early this year at our local hospital and now knows how to manage it. He had been told he does not have to see the consultant again.

His doctor told him he didn't have Asthma for years, only for it to get very bad, and have to see a private doctor to get it diagnosed who referred him to a specialist. When I called up to get a travel insurance quote, I was asked if my husband had been hospitalised for his Asthma, would the appointments with the consultant at the hospital count as hospitalised?

The person on the phone could not help me with this, he has not been rushed in as an emergency which I assume is what they mean by hospitalised. He had pre booked appointments to get the asthma under control, which it now is. I don't want to pay a loaded premium, but want to answer honestly.

in my opinion, 'hospitalised' means staying in hospital for at least one night and actually taking up a bed.

To me being hospitalised would either mean going in as an emergency requiring emergency treatment, or having a stay in hospital.

I use American Express travel insurance and don't seem to get charged any extra for my asthma (which is well controlled). I recommend asking them for a quote. The first time I had a quote I had to speak to someone for medical screening but now I just renew without having to do that.

    Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks to both of you, I took hospitalised to mean the same thing, but the person on the phone was very unhelpful, and couldn't offer any advice.

I will not say he was hospitalised.

The man/woman on the phone should know such basic information, they need a bit of retraining x
