Thanks for your help...

I think there are differences because of the holiday periods that teachers have being controlled by the timetable - you'd need to check with your employer for specific details.
  • Teachers maternity pay is ever so slightly more advantageous than local government employees. Due to a union negotation years ago.

It means you get 100% of pay as opposed to the 90% of pay that is the statutory amount for the first few weeks, I think it is 6. Then you go on to statutory maternity pay terms.

My understanding is that it isn't just at a local authority/teacher level, but a national agreement (burgandy book) that you are also entitled to 12 weeks half pay if you return to work for more than 3 months after maternity leave (full-time equivalent) i.e. if you worked full time before maternity leave and return to work at 50% of the hours you previously worked you would need to return for at least 6 months. A sort of retention bonus, which is a very typical local authority/teacher term.

Each school has policies on family care, of which maternity is the main feature, so do ask the school office or the schools personnel provider, (often out sourced, not necessarily the local authority personnel department)

In terms of maternity leave entitlement it is the same as statutory. The only difference can sometimes be the date that the leave starts and ends due to term times, you might want to check local agreements (written in your policy) as this might be stipulated. If not I know of a teacher in my area who returned to work just before the summer holidays so she got her full pay for the 6 weeks of the holidays, so might be worth trying to wangle if you can.

    Hope that helps
  • Hi, I'm a teacher and 18 weeks pregnant so I've been looking into this. According to the payroll dept in my LEA mat pay is
    4 weeks at 100%
    2 weeks at 90%
    12 weeks at 50%

On the week you begin recieving 50% pay you also begin recieveing statutory maternity pay (SMP) of 112.75 per week. In total you are entitled to 33 weeksof SMP.

All of the above are taxed

That makes a total of 39 weeks with some kind of money coming in. Any leave you take after that 39 weeks is unpaid.

    Hope this helps
