From your bank, it is essentially a bankers cheque in dollars. It will cost you and it is not a very safe payment method. You should only buy from the US if they take paypal.

If you mean why is it not a very safe payment method it is because you have to trust the seller to send you the item. There is no buyer protection except by paypal.
  • The last International Money Order I bought cost me £12!!!!

You would be better off sending US Dollars by Airsure, which both signed-for and insured delivery.

As already stated you should really pay by paypal and no other for the USA.

The only people to have ever ripped me off on ebay all used paypal, and I didn't get anything back from paypal.

Ask the seller if they accept BidPay, MoneyBookers or a business check since international money orders are not available in the UK. AuctionChex can issue a USD denominated business check issued on a US bank and send it to the seller.

You need to send cash by Airsure which is insured and is signed-for.

Sorry, I should have explained it better. The majority of US sellers are expecting the postal variety of money order when they write that they "accept international money orders". If you send them a bank-issued money order, they get cross when their local Post Office refuses to cash it... and I speak from experience.
