Cat with fractured pelvis?

One of my cats has two fractures in her pelvis since Thursday and is now on cage rest for the next 6-8 weeks.

The vet says she should be fine, and based on the internal exam, should have no problems with passing urine or moving her bowels. She's on laxatives and anti-inflammatories for a week and seems quite comfortable.

She ate about a dessertspoonful of chopped chicken yesterday and had about two tablespoons of water/cat milk and that was it for yesterday. I saw her urinating twice.

Today she had no interest in food or drink at all. By four o'clock I was getting worried as we couldn't tempt her with anything, so we started syringing water into her mouth, 10ml at a time. We did that every half hour and at about 6.30pm she ate a whole sardine and had some cat milk. Since then, she's got up twice for more milk and had good drinks each time.

She's in good form and she sat up properly for a few minutes and washed herself quite well today.

But her bowels haven't moved since we brought her home on Friday evening. Does anyone know if I need to do anything to help or is it just because she hasn't eaten enough to need to go yet? Has anyone had experience of something similar?

I cant help with the bowels question but just wanted to say my friends cat broke their pelvis a few years ago and had the cage rest etc afterwards. He went on to make a full recovery and is a very happy active cat again. I wish your cat all the best x
Me debt free thanks to MSE :T

Thank you, that's lovely to hear. I think it's going to be a long couple of months ahead. She's in good form but I don't think I'll relax until I see a result in the litter tray :).

A few years ago we had a kitten who fell/jumped off a high wall onto concrete, he broke his hip right at the top. We had it strapped by the vet and had to keep him from jumping till it healed, roughly 2-3 months. The vet suggested a rabbit cage and we had this in the dining room, just letting him out for 1 hour a day. He did get better, as I'm sure your cat will. Sounds like she's in good hands. Give her hugs and kisses from me. Softly.
I love a bargain. Now mortgage and debt free. hurray!!:smileyhea

I suspect that's what happened to our little cat too - they like to chase each other through the treetops and I think she came a cropper :(.

Still nothing in the litter, but at least she's passing lots of lovely clear urine.

Many years ago, we opened the back door and a stray feral cat staggered in, miaowed at us and collapsed. Poor lad had been hit by a car and had a broken pelvis. He had 6 or so weeks of cage rest (thanks to the CPL for helping with the cost!), including a period when the vets had to draw lots to see who would try to manually help him do his business....

He made a full recovery and lived another 12 years or so with us, but we had to regularly dose him with lactulose to soften his stools.

Your boy really landed on his feet with you:beer:.

The bit I've bolded is the bit that's worrying me - our vet said nothing about doing this, but I'm getting a little bit concerned now. Today is a bank holiday here so I don't know if I should contact the emergency vet or if it's normal for her to not go for this long as she is not really eating...

    We have a result:j

Amazing what a difference a day or two makes. I was all set to bring her to the vet's again today but she got up this morning and gobbled up a plate of chicken and went to the litter box:j

She is much brighter but crying to get out of the cage... Day 4 of 42 (or 56:eek:). We have just let her out for a few minutes while I'm home for lunch and guess what she did? Walked straight across the room to an empty cardboard box the other cats were playing with and she's just sitting it in now:rotfl:.

Glad to know that all is going well. My cat had a fractured pelvis when ran over by a car. He went on to make a full recovery and had many more happy years. I think he had a bit of arthritis in old age but otherwise, you'd never have known.xx

    It's good to hear that:beer:.

Our cat has really improved over the past couple of days. We put the cardboard box into the crate and she loves it. She is eating and drinking normally, still sleeping a lot more than usual, but in very good form now.

One week down, five or seven to go...
