Why not ask for a copy of the couriers invoice to be emailed to you; that will give an indication as to how much they paid. Last time I hired a car in the US it gave a schedule of fees and charges for admin on things such as fines, tolls, cleaning etc. so you may find something in the T&C that state the handling fees; if they have charged the courier fee plus their stated handling fee then there isn't much that you can do. If they don't state a handling fee then you could try and request a review/rebate on that portion of the charge; if they have charged more than their stated fee then you could look to claim it back and ask the CC provider to look in to it.

I can't think of a time when I have ever hired a car that didn't state that incidentals would be automatically billed to the card I presented at the time of hiring; it seems to be normal practice.

When you give your card details to a hire company you are authorising them to take any payments. Did you actually read what you signed?
The point was not that they made a charge, but that it was an unexpectedly high amount.

I guess, with hindsight, it would have been good to ask how much they would charge before asking them to send it.

(In the same way, for example, it's good to ask a garage how much a job will cost before asking them to do it.)

It would also have been courteous of the rental co to confirm the cost before doing it.

But even then, if they said it would cost £160, what other options would you have had?

In some countries courier costs are massively higher than they are here. Similarly it may well be that they dont have much use of couriers being a hire car company so wont have big discounts that mail order companies do and finally given they are just going to recharge the amount then they will just book it with one of the big couriers like DHL rather than spend hours shopping around for the best price for this particular requirement.
