Neighbours ivy damaging damaging my fence

Hi.
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum. If not mods please move to the appropriate forum. Thanks

A part of my back garden adjoins a neighbour on another street. So not my next door neighbour on the same street but on an a street parallel to mine where one corner of my garden borders his.

If you're still reading this i hope I've made that clear lol. :A

Anyway, a medium size tree and lots of ivy are now causing damage and have broken the little fence I had on my side. I cut and prune anything that reaches my side of the fence but noe its becoming unmanageable and the ivy is now growing so much its simply broken my fence and I can't do much about it without asking him to manage his side of the garden.

Question is, how do I go about asking the owner of that house/garden in a nice way without causing conflict? Do I walk over to his house knock on the door and ask nicely? Do I call the council? Do I tell my home insurance?

Thing is I am pretty sure the house is rented so the chances of me knocking and finding the owner answering the door are remote.

Would really like advice on what to do as I've never been in this situation before. I'm always on friendly terms with my physical next door neighbours but this person or house is in another street and I've never really seen anyone in the back garden let alone expect who to speak to.

Thanks for reading :)

Knock on the door and mention the issue to the adult of the household , see what happens?
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Nothing whatever to do with your insurance. In fact, I think that insurance only covers brick walls and not fences.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Knock on the door and speak to the occupier nicely. If they are not the owner, then find out who the owner/letting agent is, and put it in writing to them.

Thanks all. Will try the obvious knocking strategy first and see where it goes.

whoops - meant to start a new thread not reply here. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
