I bought my 1970s bungalow, my 1930s semi and my 1948 war damage rebuilt semi all without surveys and nothing they threw up afterwards gave me a huge surprise. That's because I've always used builders to assess the houses with me.

Builders are down to earth, with no buttock-covering, but they do see everything from a very builder-ish perspective.

The 1930s semi was described as "thrown together," but it wasn't "falling down" and proved the best investment. Not quite true...the foundations were time-limited, but I got out with a few years to spare and no survey would have found that anyway.

The 1948 war damage re-build was "built well... like a tank" and it was very sound, but chasing out for the inevitable electrics was a nightmare. What the hell did they use for blocks just after the War?

This 1970s bungalow was "OK....I've seen worse" and that's also how I'd describe it, but there again, I've half demolished it anyway! :rotfl:

I bought my 22 year old bungalow two years ago .I paid £100 for a survey .The survey said "general lack of maintenance inside and out " and to insure for £22,000 more than I paid .
