Self-tanning help please? Never used one before...

I have very pale skin - as pale as a skin can be (milk white). Do self-tanning creams/lotions work on all skin colour? Never used one so I don't know whether it will work on me.

I went to Superdrug and the range of self-tanning stuff they had on there really confused me. Self-tanning gel, cream, lotion, milk and even self-tanning towels. I don't know what the differences are?

Another thing is on some packaging it says "for fair skin", "for dark skin", "for normal skin" etc. Does that mean I need to have a fair skin to use the ones with "for fair skin" or does it mean it will give me a fair skin colour? Does "for dark skin" mean it's for people with dark skin or that it will give you a dark colour?

It's all very confusing. Any help from someone who uses them would be appreciated. Thanks.

from personal experience, i steer well away from fake tans....... however. i workin boots and the amount of customers that recommend these tanning moisturisers is amazing, the johnsons n johnsons one is one of the best selling and as you build it up gradually this should suit your colouring. Most self tans are far too dark even when they say for fair skin on them.

i hope this helps. good luck

Thanks! Can I ask why you would steer away from them? Also does "fair skin" mean it will give you a fair colour or is it for people who already have fair skin?

i steer well clear from them because i'm rubbish at applying them, they always end up streaky!!! this could be plainly cuz i'm !!!! at applying them or i didnt do it right.. (exfloiate, moisturise etc)

fair skin means for people who are normally fair skinned. if for example you had been away and got a bit of a tan and wanted to prolong it instead of letting it fade then you'd use normal to dark... with talking to the customers, they always start off using the lightest shade so they can build it up to the shade they want. no point useing a darker shade to start off with and spending the next 2 hours trying to scrub it off when its developed!!

Some great information there - thank you! So I guess I should only go for the "fair skin" ones and build it up until I get the shade I want. :)

Any idea the differences between gel, lotion, milk, towel etc.?

the towels are the worst i've heard of and used...very dark and obvious streaking goes on!! i haven't used the gels so i cant say. Personally, as you are fair skinned i'd say use the lotions. Oh and while i remember, when you apply them, either wear plastic gloves ( not your marigolds!!) or wash your hands really well straight after or you will end up with dark palms. good luck, let me know how you get on

The difference between gel, lotion, milk etc is just personal preference, as is when you buy a shower creme, gel etc.

If you havent used one before i would highly recommend you buy one which is tinted so that as you are applying it you can see where you have been. I have used them for years but if i try a non tinted i end up with streaks which is why i always stick to Boots No7 self tan range. I use the 'Quick Dry Tinted Lotion' which is coloured as you apply so helps you get even coverage and then develops into a wear off tan. This comes in light/medium or medium/dark. It isnt particularly money savineg price but well worth it.

You get a 200 or 250ml not sure without going and looking bottle for £11 or somewhere there. Good luck. PLease make sure you use a scrub and scrunchie in the bath/shower beforehand and moisturise ankles, knees, elbows.

Thank you - both of you! Am really quite excited because I have been pale all my life! Looking forward to the transformation. :D
  • Hi i find Dove tan lotion excellent because i am pale and have used fake tan for years and had a few bad turn outs, Dove can be built up if its too light at first. I use Dove leave it on for 4-5 hours and then i have bath or shower when i see it start to develop is prob, don't srcub yourself tho.
